Mount Damavand is a familiar name to many people around the world but it is not the only towering summit and touristy option in Iran. There are approximately 44 high mountains and summits in Iran that we may know just a few of them.

Some Peaks in Iran

Damavand Peak

Damavand summit is the highest volcano peak in Iran and the Middle East which is located in North of the country. In terms of administrative division, Damavand is situated in Larijan district, Amol County, Mazandaran province. In clean air and sunny days, this spectacular summit can be observed from Tehran, Qom, and the Caspian Sea.

In 2008, Damavand was registered as the first natural heritage site of Iran. As it was mentioned earlier, mountain is a legendary symbol in many cultures and popular mountains have been cited in many mythical stories. Damavand has been cited in Persian mythology, as Zahhak was chained within the mountain which is the main reason for Damavand's reputation.

Damavand elevation is 5610 meters with the minimum of 38500 years age lifespan. Damavand is a potentially active volcano where its main structure was formed in Holocene, the forth geological epoch. The first eruption of Damavand was 1078 million years ago. The diameter of its caldera is about 400 meters that its surface is covered by ice.

Sabalan Peak

Mount Sabalan is among Iran's highest mountain which is located in North West of the country in Ardebil province and subsequent to Damavand and Alam-Kuh, it can be named as the third highest peak in Iran. Sabalan elevation is 4811 meters and it is a dormant volcano. There is a small lake on the top of Sabalan summit; additionally, multiple natural thermal springs can be mentioned as the reason for its fame. Alvares ski resort is situated on Sabalan hillside where attracts thousands of tourists, annually.

Sabalan has been known as the emergence site of Zarathustra by many resources. Existence of Zarathustra in this region was also cited in Nietzsche works. Mount Sabalan is an extremely sacred place and treated with great respect by local people. 

Dena Peak

Dena sub-range is located on the boundary of Boyer-Ahmad and Isfahan provinces. Mount Dena possesses 40 peaks which can be called the largest and highest sub-range within the Zagros Mountain Range. Many people are on this assumption that Dena is a high mountain and just few people are aware of its sub-range characteristic. The eastern border of Dena preserved area begins from north of Sisakht and it is among one of the most prominent preserved areas of the country. 

Alam_Kuh Peak

Alam-Kuh is the second high peak in Iran. It has four hiking routes that require professional climbers who are familiar with rock climbing and cliff climbing skills since this is the hardest mountain, technically. Alam-Kuh has the same place as K2 in global rank. Subsequent to Mount Everest, K2 is the second highest mountain in the world. 

Alam-Kuh is situated on 20 kilometers south west of Kelardasht. Parachan and Taleqan are cities in the immediate proximity of Alborz province which are on a close distance to Alam-Kuh. Many athletes have climbed Alam-Kuh summit, Hosein Talebi Moqadam and climbers from Hamedan can be mentioned as the most prominent ones.

Binalud Peak

Mount Binalud with an elevation of 3150 meters is located in north east of Iran. In fact, this splendid mountain is a part of Alborz Mountain Range which is situated on North of Neyshabur. This beautiful mountain separates Neyshabur plains from Mashhad. Binalud word has a meaning that makes sense to the location of the mountain; it means a mountain which separates two plains from each other. Binalud is also known as Binalut or Benli in regional language.

Alvand Peak

Alvand is a mountain within Hamedan that possesses a summit with an elevation of 3500 meters. This glorious mountain is located on south of Hamedan and north of Tuyserkan where is mostly covered by snow and spring is the best time to visit. Alvand water springs have the most pure and clean water.

Oshtoran_Kuh Peak

Oshtoran Kuh is a mountain range near Azna County in Lorestan province which has a length of 50 kilometers. There is no doubt that Oshtoran Kuh is one of the most beautiful mountains in Iran where has many natural and permanent glaciers. The highest peak of Oshtoran Kuh is called Chal Kabud with an elevation of 4100 meters.

Oshtoran Kuh has been known as a preserved area since 1961 with diverse flora coverage. Rheum, Astragalus, Pistacia terebinthus are among the plants which grow in this region.
