Susan Danial of Iran Tourism Attraction

Susa city (Shush) or the city of Daniel's mausoleum is one of the most ancient cities across the world. In addition, it is narrated that Susa is the oldest touristy city which is located in Khuzestan. About 4000 BC, Susa was built as a religious center for the surrounding inhabitants. After years of vicissitude full of victories and defeats, prosperity and recession, it began to be destroyed gradually with the collapse of Achaemenid Empire in 332 BC. Susa was destructed completely and became a small village enclosed the tomb of Daniel.

During Elamite era, Susa was the capital of this significant civilization for thousand years and the political capital of Achaemenid dynasty. As the time went by, the city had undergone many historical changes as it lost its centrality following the attack of Alexander the Great. During Sasanian Empire, Susa along with Shooshtar and Jondi Shapour cities were considered as the economic capitals of silk production and exportation to different parts of the globe. The city was captured by Muslims in 17 AH (638 AD); moreover, it was one of the most prosperous and populous cities for a long time during Islamic era. After Ahvaz became the capital of Khuzestan, Susa lost its significance. Geographical and political status of Susa had provided appropriate access to many roads such as Royal Road that linked the city to diverse parts of the world.

Susa Tourism Hills

Susa hills are situated adjacent to Susa city and in an approximately 50 kilometers distance to the south of Andimeshk city. According to the archeological evidence, the hills were about 400 hectares in area. This vast region is located between the two large rivers of Karkheh in the west and Dez in the east.

It has been more than 147 years since the first archeological exploration in Susa. Furthermore, some symbols of civilization have been recognized that belong to the period between fourth millennium BC to the thirteenth century AD (seventh century AH).

The north of Khuzestan province was the entrance of the three rivers of Karun, Karkheh and Dez into this sedimentary and fertile plain where was a proper place for the settlements of primary human who were recently acquainted with cultivation and domestication of animals. In 5000 BC, these primary human had solved the problem of water supply by building drainages and dams. Archeologists such as Ghirshman and Jean Perrot had discovered remnants of giant buildings within Susa hills which prove the significance of these hills across the region.

The tomb of Daniel the prophet

The mausoleum of the prophet Daniel is situated in Susa city which has been respected greatly by the local people. It is cited in the Bible that the mausoleum of Esther is located in Susa but it can be found in Hamadan city. Certainly, the tomb can be observed on the picture is attributed to Daniel, a Jewish prophet. The mausoleum was built in the style of the traditional architecture of Khuzestan's residents.

Register the city of Susa as a World Heritage Site

Susa archeological site was registered as a world heritage on the 39th meeting of the committee members of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015, in Bonn, Germany. This dossier was compiled by the Iranian specialists with the management of Muhammad Hassan Talebian, the deputy of the cultural heritage; consequently, it was registered as the eighteenth world heritage on UNESCO list. The dossier of Susa cultural heritage includes the Shahoor's palace, Apadana, the eastern gate, Hedish, The fifteenth city, the Achaemenid village, Susa (Shush) Central Mosque, and the Islamic style buildings, Acropol hills and the French fort.

The ancient courtyard of Susa

The ancient city of Susa was once the center of two significant civilizations that they both had affected each other. The first one is the civilization of Mesopotamia and the other one is Elamite civilization. The location of the region in the north of Persian Gulf, adjacent to Mesopotamia has had a great impact on the civilization of Susa.
