Introduction to Guilan Province

Gilan province is among Northern provinces of Iran with the centrality of Rasht metropolis. Different comments were made about the name of Gilan and the meaning of "Gil" word. Dehkhoda dictionary illustrates that Gilan word is derived from the word "Gil" adding to "an" as the place suffix means the settlement of "Gils". Moreover, it discussed that the word was pronounced "Gelan" in Pahlavi language and "Gelae" in Greek language. 

In the north, the province lies along the Caspian Sea and has an international border with Azerbaijan country via Astara. In the west, it is surrounded by Ardebil province. In the south it is limited to Zanjan and Qazvin provinces, and also to Mazandaran province, in the east. The area of Gilan is 14,044 square kilometers. 

The nature of Gilan is covered by forests with mild and humid climate. This province includes lush green coverage of northwest of Alborz mountain range and west part of the Caspian Sea southern shores.

Masal city high waterfalls

If you visit Masal, it is highly recommended to enjoy its waterfalls including Viouz waterfall adjacent to Alanza Yaylag district in Shanderman, Khun waterfall with over 15 meters height, Touli Nesa waterfall, and Ramineh waterfall with 10 meters height. In addition, caves such as Khandil-e Posht ancient cave, Chasli cave, and Kalchal cave can be named as tourist destinations of Masal. The rocky wall of "Asb Rish" in Masal owns one of the highest cliffs for rock climbing across the country where splendid national, regional or even global tournaments can be held.    

Asb Rish wall is not only gives the opportunity for rock climbing to professional climbers, but it also creates the possibility for kayaking for those who are keen on riding in the roaring river down the cliff. 

Titi Caravanserai

Although Titi Caravanserai is currently considered as one of the main attractions of Gilan, it had one of the most important strategic locations throughout the region. The caravanserai is located in Siahkal County, in a 25 kilometers distance to Lahijan city, 75 kilometers to Rasht city and on the right hand of Shimrud beach and at the intersection of Shimrud with Baba Kuh. In 1996, Titi caravanserai in Siahkal was registered on national works of Iran list as 1784 number.  

Nevertheless, this caravanserai is not the only attraction of Siahkal County and Siahkal itself is a beautiful attraction in the district. Siahkal County, with its floodplain position, is situated in a 15 kilometers distance to Lahijan city and a small river called Shamrud passes exactly in the middle of the city which presents a special beauty to the region.

There are many stories about the construction of the caravanserai that one of them narrates that Mrs. Titi was the aunt of one of Safavid dynasty kings. She decided to build a glorious caravanserai on her own name in Siahkal district and it was the time when the first steps were taken to build one of the oldest buildings in Siahkal. 

Masuleh village

Masuleh was a village that the yard of the building above is the roof of the building below that turned to Masuleh city now. The city is one of the most famous tourism attractions of Iran and one of the most prominent samples of this kind of architecture across the globe. This city is situated in one of the most crowded northern provinces of Iran, the green Gilan, in an approximately 65 kilometers distance to Rasht city. You can kill two birds with one stone by travelling to Masuleh! According to historic documents, this place dates back to approximately 800 to 1000 years ago; additionally, you can observe the most picturesque natural views of Iran within the village. Masuleh is located in Alborz forested hillsides and 1050 meters above sea level; therefore, it has a relatively favorable weather.

Visadar waterfall in Gilan is situated in Rezvanshahr region which is known as the third highest waterfall of Gilan due to its altitude. The particular rocky shape of the waterfall is considered as its unique characteristic which can be observed in just a few waterfalls. The surrounding environment of the waterfall and its easy access create a memorable day for families. It is interesting to know that Iran possesses 392 seasonal waterfalls and 287 non-seasonal waterfalls that the majority of them are located in Lorestan Province. However, the northern provinces of Iran are not exempt from this rule and their waterfalls are always active.

Heyran

The beautiful village of Heyran is situated in Astara city, Gilan province, where is considered as one of the most spectacular nature and tourism attraction in Iran. Since the village has an extremely favorable climate, it has captivated the attention of many tourists in recent years. After visiting Visadar waterfall you can go to Heyran defile and enjoy the unique nature and its beautiful road. 

Lisar castle

Lisar castle refers to Seljuk dynasty that is located in Lisar village, Talesh County, which was registered on national works of Iran list as 8780 number, on May 31, 2003. The castle is situated on 80 meters above the ground level and on a rocky hill in a 15 kilometers distance to the center of Talesh County and the center of Lisar district. Lisar castle is composed of two parts: outdoor area is the first part where included a vast area and it is separated from the surrounding lands by a sturdy wall.
